Today, I took the familiar 1 train uptown to Lincoln Center. i say familiar because it’s a journey i’ve done numerous times since moving to New York a little under 7 years ago. The first time, if i recall correctly, was to see The Nutcracker, the second, a Puccini opera that was being screened…
Dev Hynes is easily my favorite artist. I can’t say I’ve been following him from the beginning of his career, but I started following him 2008 while he was making music as Lightspeed Champion. His show at the Bowery Ballroom that summer was my first concert in New York City. I was interning in the city then.
He has since put Lightspeed Champion on hiatus and has been making music as Blood Orange.
Blood Orange is a completely different musical style from Lightspeed Champion, but Dev manages to excel regardless of the style.
The first Blood Orange album was fantastic. I personally haven’t listened to an artist that has stayed so consistently amazing year after year. He’s not afraid to reinvent himself, and I can never get sick of his music.
His new album, Cupid Deluxe (now available on iTunes - double vinyl out next week) is stellar, and I am super excited to go to the album release party/concert this Friday.
